  • Blue Cheese: The key ingredient, blue cheese gives this dressing its bold, tangy flavor. You can use Roquefort or Gorgonzola as alternatives. Adjust the crumble size to control the dressing’s texture. If you have extra blue cheese, use it in Buffalo Cauliflower Tacos or Baked Buffalo Chicken.
  • Sour Cream: Adds a creamy, slightly tangy element that balances the richness of the blue cheese. Full-fat or low-fat sour cream both work. Use leftover sour cream in Mexican Street Corn Salad, Hashbrown Casserole, or Corn Muffins.
  • Heavy Cream: Also called double cream, this adds richness and smoothness. Heavy whipping cream works too. If needed, full-fat milk or half-and-half can be substituted. Use extra cream in Chicken Tikka Masala, Lasagna Soup, or a White Cake.
  • Olive Oil: Extra virgin olive oil adds depth, but a lighter olive oil works if you prefer a milder taste.
  • Lemon Juice: Fresh or bottled lemon juice adds brightness. Lime juice can be used as an alternative.
  • Salt and Black Pepper: Season to taste. Add more or less depending on your preference.

Recipe Variations

This blue cheese dressing is easy to customize. Try these variations:

  • Buttermilk Version: Swap the heavy cream for buttermilk to create a tangier, thinner consistency—great for drizzling over salads.
  • Greek Yogurt Option: Use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream for a protein-rich, creamy alternative.
  • Blue Cheese Vinaigrette: Replace the creamy base with olive oil, vinegar, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper for a lighter, tangy dressing.
  • Spicy Variation: Add hot sauce or diced jalapeños for a little heat—perfect for dipping chicken wings.
  • Herb-Infused Dressing: Stir in fresh dill, chives, or parsley for an extra layer of flavor.

Tips For Making The Best Blue Cheese Dressing

  • Use a Block of Blue Cheese: A high-quality block is better than pre-crumbled cheese, giving you a creamier texture and fresher flavor.
  • Adjust Seasoning: Taste after mixing and add more salt or pepper as needed.

    Terrific recipe.

I have tried every brand of store bought blue cheese dressing that I could find. I finally gave up and have been using ranch. Itโ€™s good, but not the blue cheese I was really wanting. So I decided that I should try making it from scratch. This recipe is so so delicious! Thank you so much! Iโ€™m sharing this with all my friends

I had some left over Roquefort cheese from my local cheese shop and made this dressing tonight (second time) and just love it. Even bought some lettuce today just to use the dressing. So easy too.

    2. Jenny Bussell says:

Very tasty and convenient portion. Mine turned out Greek yogurt thick. Not pourable at all. I measured everything. Iโ€™m still using. Not sure if I should use heavy cream or olive oil to thin. I really like the flavor.

  10. candy says:

Since there is only the two of us this would be perfect and nothing wasted.
