  • Butter: Salted butter brings a rich, creamy flavor to the soup while sautéing the onions and garlic. For a vegan alternative, swap it with olive oil.
  • Onions and Garlic: These kitchen essentials create the foundation of the soup’s deep, savory flavor.
  • Smoked Paprika: Adds a subtle smokiness that enhances the soup’s flavor. If smoked paprika isn’t available, regular or sweet paprika can be used instead. We use smoked paprika in many of our recipes including, Smothered Pork Chops, Cheese Grits, and Turkey Chili.
  • Dried Basil: A reliable choice for bold flavor that holds up to cooking. If you have fresh basil, add it at the end of cooking or just before blending for a vibrant, fresh taste.
  • Chili Powder: Provides a gentle heat that complements the tomatoes without overpowering the dish. Use more or less depending on your spice preference.
  • Salt: Start with 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt or 1/8 teaspoon regular table salt. Taste as you go and adjust to your liking.
  • Canned Tomatoes: Use a 14- to 15-ounce can of diced, crushed, or whole tomatoes as the base. They’re convenient and deliver consistent flavor. If you’ve got leftover canned tomatoes, use them in Lentil Soup, Brunswick Stew, or Goulash.
  • Broth: Low-sodium chicken broth is my go-to for balanced seasoning, but vegetable broth works wonderfully for a vegan version.
  • Honey: A small drizzle of honey or sugar balances the acidity of the tomatoes, creating a well-rounded flavor.

Recipe Variations

  • Tomato Soup with Bacon: For a smoky touch, cook 1 strip of bacon and set it aside. Use the drippings to sauté the onions and garlic. Crumble the bacon over the finished soup for a flavorful garnish.
  • Add Vegetables: Toss in a chopped carrot with the onions and garlic for added nutrients and a natural sweetness that balances the acidity of the tomatoes.
  • Greek Tomato Soup: Add 3 tablespoons of uncooked orzo pasta to the soup and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes until tender. Skip pureeing and garnish with crumbled feta cheese for a Mediterranean twist.
  • Spicy Tomato Soup: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a splash of sriracha for a bit of heat.
  • Add Protein: Make the soup more filling by adding cooked chicken or mini meatballs for a heartier meal.

Wow, this one is better than the local bistro’s tomato soup. So simple, just yummy.

    1. Joanie Zisk says:

Thank you so much! I’m happy you enjoyed it.

  2. Carolyn Caywood says:

This a recipe easily made. Using crushed tomatoes added texture and smoothness without using a blender or immersion blender. The recipe allowed me adjust to my taste, I used Italian blend seasoning. Tips and suggestions were helpful.

  3. Cyndi Abdi says:

    Great! Love it…

  4. Sharon says:

I doubled this since I had a 28-oz can crushed tomatoes (I didnโ€™t feel the need to blend). This soup is delicious- especially with a grilled cheese sandwich! Another winning recipe to add to my list of faves!

  5. Eugene says:

I am a divorced man, new to cooking. I like the idea of your recipes, dishes for one, but do you have any that require less than 5 or 6 ingredients??
Example: This tomato soup recipe has 10 ingredients plus toppings.

    1. Joanie Zisk says:

Absolutely, I get where you’re coming from! Cooking for one doesn’t have to mean an endless list of ingredients. While the tomato soup recipe you mentioned has 10 ingredients, keep in mind that 4 of those are basic spices that are great pantry staples. Once you have them, you can use them in multiple recipes.

Also, remember that recipes are more like guidelines. Feel free to simplify or swap out ingredients to suit your taste and make your life easier.

  6. ERIIN says:

Made this recipe tonight. It was very good. I will definitely make again. I added some black pepper. If I changed anything else it might be to use a little less honey. It was so nice to have hot soup for dinner(not from a can) with the weather turning colder.

  7. Peggy O'Keefe says:

The soup was really good and filling. I used 2 small cloves of garlic which made it a little more spicy. I’ll definitely make the Creamy Tomato Soup again but will use 1 clove of garlic.

  8. Nancy says:

Great tasting soup. I loved it!

  9. Laurie says:

Can’t wait to try! Hubby is not a big soup person but I love it. Tomato and a grilled cheese….just what I want.

  10. J. Hegyi says:

    Great recipe.
