  1. Next, gently fold in the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients with a whisk, stirring until just combined. It’s fine if there are a few lumps remaining in the waffle batter—no need to overmix.

Expert Tips

  • Consult Your Manual: Always start by reading your waffle maker’s instructions, as models vary in cooking times and techniques.
  • Preheat Well: Ensure your waffle iron is fully preheated for that crave-worthy golden crust.
  • Mix Mindfully: Resist the urge to overmix your batter; it’s okay to leave a few lumps.
  • Oil It Up: A quick swipe of oil on the iron ensures your waffle slides right off.
  • Steam is Key: Wait for the steam to stop rising from the waffle maker for a waffle that’s cooked but still moist.
  • Mind Your Size: This recipe is tailored for a Belgian waffle maker, which may differ in size from yours. Any leftover batter can go towards a smaller, bonus waffle.

Serving Suggestions

Indulging in a waffle shouldn’t just stop at the fluffy, golden disk itself. It’s all about the toppings and pairings that make the waffle a star dish. Here are some mouthwatering ideas to take your waffle from “yum” to “can’t get enough.”

  • Caramelized Bananas: Think beyond the basic banana slices. Caramelized bananas, cooked with a sprinkle of brown sugar and a touch of cinnamon, make an incredibly sweet and decadent topping that pairs perfectly with the waffle’s crispy edges.
  • Lemon Curd: For a bright and tangy twist, slather some homemade or store-bought lemon curd on top of your waffle. The zesty lemon flavor is a refreshing contrast to the waffle’s natural sweetness.
  • Fried Apples: Imagine a combination of warm, cinnamon-spiced apples sitting atop your fluffy waffle. Fried apples add an autumnal feel that evokes comfort food nostalgia.
  • Apple Butter: For a taste that’s both sweet and spiced, a dollop of apple butter can do wonders. It adds richness and depth of flavor that simple butter just can’t match.
  • Caramelized Plums: Elevate your waffle game with caramelized plums. These plums, cooked down with just a bit of sugar, offer a tart and sweet complexity that pairs exceptionally well with a crisp, fluffy waffle.
  • Chocolate Lovers: Melt some dark chocolate and pour it over your waffle. Add a dollop of whipped cream and garnish with chocolate shavings or chocolate chips. It’s like dessert for breakfast but without the guilt.
  • Fresh Berries – Top with some strawberries, blueberries or any type of fresh berries.
  • Homemade Syrup: It’s quick, easy, and tastes so much better than anything you can buy, with no additives or preservatives

Instructions

  • Preheat waffle iron. Spray with non stick cooking spray or brush with melted butter.
Beat the egg in a bowl until fluffy. Add the milk, vanilla, melted butter, and sugar and mix well.
  • Whisk in the flour, baking powder, and salt and mix gently until combined. Do not overmix.
  • Pour the batter on the iron and close it. Depending on the size of your waffle maker, you might have too much batter. If so, use the little bit of remaining batter to make a second, smaller waffle.

    2. Amy Thompson says:

This recipe is very tasty and was perfect for our mini waffle iron! We got 6 mini waffles out of it.

  3. Terry says:

I tried it at home before having my grade 12 Food & Healthy Living class try it. I found it to be crispy and light; a little sweeter than my usual recipe. My class will be trying it this week. Since Covid, each student must make and consume their own products in the lab, so this website is ideal and saves me from trying to portion-down my usual recipes.

    Thanks Joanie!

  4. Jean says:

I have made these waffles a few times, and I love them!
Yes, the batter seems a bit runny, but they always puff up when cooking. They are light, moist and tasty! It makes a perfect amount, for me at least.

  5. Rachel says:

The taste is good but it always comes out really doughy and not fluffy and crispy

  6. Kiana says:

I thought they were delicious and buttery, but if you like sweeter waffles I would suggest putting more sugar or more syrup but for me these are perfect and more of a savory waffle which are great for chicken and waffles.🙂

    1. Joanie Zisk says:

I’m so glad you enjoyed the recipe. Thanks so much for your feedback.

  7. Hailey Byrnes says:

the batter was runny and it came out a little bit flat but i found if you added a bit more flour it gets fluffy but the taste was good:)

  8. Chrissy says:

My 4 year old loves waffles but he’s really the only one who eats them- so this recipe for one waffle is perfect! He loves to help me make them and they are quite delicious! This is a staple in my house

  9. Mara says:

Very good recipe for two waffles.

For those saying it came out flat, it might help to whip the egg white separately until it form peaks and fold it im gently at the very end. I got this tip from the regular Belgian waffles I make. Also, I added 1/4 tsp cinnamon and skipped the sugar because I was using maple syrup as a topping.

    Thanks, Joanie!

  10. Andrea says:

Made for my daughter who complained it was too eggy. Since a regular batch of waffles calls for one egg and this recipe for one waffle called for one egg, I can see how that would be. It seemed rubbery. I would like to try it with a small amount of egg beaters and see if that helps.
