Ingredients
If you have any ingredients leftover from this easy Salisbury Steak recipe, check out our Leftover Ingredients Recipe Finder.
- Ground Beef: This recipe uses 80/20 ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat) for rich flavor. Leftover beef can be used in beef tacos for one, small batch lasagna rollups, stuffed peppers for one, or our single serving nachos recipe.
- Beef Patty Seasoning: Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, mustard powder, garlic powder, kosher salt, and black pepper add depth and flavor.
- Olive Oil: I use extra virgin olive oil for its bold flavor and quality. A lighter olive oil works too.
- Gravy Ingredients: The homemade gravy is made with butter, sliced onions, mushrooms, and Worcestershire sauce.
Recipe Variations
Here are a few easy ways to change up your homemade Salisbury Steak based on what you like or need:
- Turkey Salisbury Steak: Use ground turkey instead of beef for a lighter option. Keep in mind, turkey cooks a little faster.
- Vegan Salisbury Steak: Use a plant-based meat substitute and vegan Worcestershire sauce. Swap the beef broth for vegetable broth and use vegan sour cream in the gravy.
- Spicy Version: Mix in a pinch of cayenne pepper or sliced jalapeños for extra heat.
- Extra Mushrooms: Double the mushrooms in the gravy if you want a stronger mushroom flavor.
- Cheese-Topped: Add a slice of cheddar or Swiss to the cooked patty before pouring on the gravy. Cover the skillet briefly to melt the cheese.
How To Make Salisbury Steak
This low-carb Salisbury Steak skips the breadcrumbs but keeps all the flavor. Here’s how to make it:
- Make the Beef Patty: In a bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Shape into a round or oval patty.
- Cook the Patty: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patty and cook until browned on both sides and no longer pink in the center, about 4-5 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil to keep warm.
- Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions and mushrooms and sauté until tender, about 4-5 minutes.
- Add Liquids: Stir in Worcestershire sauce and beef broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 4-5 minutes until the gravy thickens slightly.
- Serve: Spoon the gravy over the cooked patty and serve warm.

I made for dinner tonight. It absolutely delicious. I made two smaller patties instead of one larger one, more mushrooms just because I love them. I did find it a bit too peppery for my taste. I like a thicker gray through, what can I use to thicken it? 👍👍🇨🇦
You could add flour to the melted butter after veggies are soft, but you must whisk whisk whisk to prevent the lumps from happening. You could also add some cornstarch to it at the end that always works well!! Good luck
made this tonight..without the sauce ..instead fried some boiled potato in the fat out of the meat.. awesome taste in the meat…cheers
So glad to find this site!
Re Salisbury steak recipe, it was good flavor, but needed some more tweaking & time. The onions still had some crunch texture sauce didn’t reduce much & meat could have used some low covered heat in an oven to get more tender. I will keep trying recipes & customize this one a bit more. Thank you for the one dish idea & it’s helpful!
I typically buy 93%/7% lean ground beef, what do you recommend for this recipe? I can’t wait to try this.
Hi Daphne,
That percentage would be perfect. I usually use between 85 and 93 percent.
Enjoy!
Great recipe. Good flavor. I usually don’t care for Salisbury steak. The ingredients peaked my interest and the picture made it look yummy. Made it as written. I wouldn’t change a thing. Thanks! It’s a keeper.
Hi Rhonda,
I’m so happy you enjoyed the salisbury steak. Thanks so much for taking the time to let me know.

The recipe looks good, and ultimately “doable” until I got to the bottom. 1tsp of sour cream. I don’t often buy sour cream, and I certainly wouldn’t buy it for a recipe that calls for 1 tsp. Is there something I could substitute?
Hi Judy,
The sour cream just makes the sauce a little creamier. You could definitely leave the sour cream out or stir in a little cream or whole milk instead.
Joanie
Or even greek yogurt or plain yogurt or cream cheese.
I made the Salisbury steak recipe and it was delicious, the gravy was very thin. What did I do wrong
Hi Katie,
I’m so glad you enjoyed the salisbury steak! Thanks so much for letting me know.
The sauce reduces as it simmers so quite possibly your sauce might have needed to simmer just a bit longer.
Joanie
Add some cornstarch at the end it’ll thicken it well little goes a long way, I usually add a tsp. Cornstarch to 4 oz. of water stir well and add to gravy a little at a time and sometimes I use tblp of the cornstarch
