How To Make A Rice Krispie Treat

  1. Melting Marshmallows and Butter: In a microwave, heat the marshmallows and butter together for 30 seconds. This softens them for easy mixing.
  2. Mixing with Cereal: Once melted, stir in the rice cereal until it’s fully coated with the marshmallow mixture.
  3. Setting in Dish: Transfer this mixture into a buttered baking dish, spreading it evenly.

For an extra zesty flavor, try spreading a layer of lemon curd on top – it’s a deliciously tangy addition!

Expert Tips

  • Remove Marshmallows Quickly: As soon as the marshmallows are melted, take them out of the microwave. Overcooking can make them hard and thick, affecting the treat’s texture.
  • Stir Gently: When mixing the cereal with the marshmallows, stir gently to avoid breaking the crispy rice cereal, which can change the treat’s texture.
  • Press Lightly: Press the mixture into your pan softly. You want a gooey, light treat, not one that’s too firm and compact.

This is just the most perfect little treat and it literally takes just a few minutes to make!

    1. Twila says:

I made this recipe but added 1/8 t. Vanilla extract to the melted marshmallows. I also used a lightly greased 2 x3 inch Ziploc container to make the treat a bit thicker.

  2. Katie S says:

Thanks so much for this and all your recipes Joanie, my 6 and 8 yr old boys love making one for each of them and they get to be decorate them with any kind of sprinkle they want. We usually split each into two servings, so dessert two nights in a row, yay! Love these!

    1. Joanie Zisk says:

I’m absolutely thrilled to hear that your boys are having a blast making their own Rice Krispie Treats! The idea to decorate them with their choice of sprinkles is just genius. It’s like a mini art project with a delicious outcome. Splitting each treat into two servings for dessert two nights in a row is a smart move! More to enjoy and it makes the fun last longer.

  3. Lavonne L Fawver says:

Just made this tonight with unsalted butter. I really appreciate the nutrition facts as I recently had to go on a renal diet and it has helped me find some fun things to cook and still eat appropriately. Especially since I rarely enjoy leftovers. Thanks Joanie. โค

  4. Sharon says:

I’m so happy you enjoyed the rice krispies treats!

  5. Judith says:

This was great and simple too. My 7 year old grandson was over and was able to make this. (Yes, I oversaw his efforts.) I buy those variety packs of cereal and we used one of those bags. (32 grams/1.12 ounces) It was a scant cup but worked fine. We used Cocoa Puffs. Next we’ll try Golden Grahams and throw in some mini-chips.

  6. Jwells says:

Add a tsp of peanut butter to the marshmallow mix while melting then add rice cereal-gives it some flavor. To get really crazy throw in a tblsp of mini chocolate chips after itโ€™s all mixed but not too hot. Press into dish as usual.

  7. Elizabeth Barnett says:

kinda blah with the missing vanilla! otherwise, this is a great recipe!

  8. Christina M Vincent says:

    1. Joanie Zisk says:

      Thank you, Christina.

  9. Laura Potts says:

I am so happy I found this recipe! I love Rice Krispie treats, but since I live alone, I never make them because I don’t want to eat the whole pan myself. Now that won’t be a problem. The only possible problem I can see is I might make this recipe to often ๐Ÿ˜Š

    1. Joanie Zisk says:

Hi Laura, I love this recipe so much and for the exact same reasons you do. It’s great for portion control and with Rice Krispies treats, I have absolutely no will power. This mini size is perfect for me ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you so much for letting me know like the recipe.

  10. Howard says:

Love the concept of cooking for one. Kids grown and out of house. Ex-wife moved on. Not found of fancy foods or left overs. Have freezed extra food but except for soups things get thrown out(my dogs love leftovers.). Thanks again.

    1. Mimi says:

Thank you so much! I always had to make a big batch, for the โ€œgrandkidsโ€. But Mimi always ended up eating most of them! This is sooooo perfect. I added a little bit of vanilla after I mixed it all up.
