Ingredients

chocolate chips, graham crackers and marshmallows on a brown wooden cutting board.
  • Chocolate: I use chocolate chips for ease and convenience, as they’re a pantry staple for many. Whether you love semi-sweet or dark chocolate, the choice is yours. Brands like Ghirardelli and Guittard offer quality options, while Hershey’s chocolate squares are a classic go-to. If you’ve got extra chocolate chips, consider using them to make a small batch of Peanut Butter Bars, Chocolate Chip Cookies, or a single serving Brookie or Nanaimo Bar!
  • Marshmallows: For a 10-ounce ramekin, 7-8 large marshmallows should fully cover the layer of chocolate. Alternatively, mini marshmallows are a great option and may provide more even coverage. Extra marshmallows can be used to make a single serving Rice Krispie Treat or a small batch of Ambrosia.
  • Graham Crackers: These sweet, whole-grain crackers are typically found in the cookie aisle in US grocery stores. For those in the UK, digestive biscuits are a suitable alternative. Looking for more variety? Try ginger snaps, vanilla wafers, or fresh fruit like strawberries and pineapple chunks for a refreshing twist. Use any extra graham crackers in a single serving No-Bake Cheesecake or in a mini Icebox Cake.

Recipe Variations

If you’re looking to shake things up, here’s how you can put a new spin on this classic dessert dip recipe.

  • Dark Chocolate S’mores Dip: Switch out the regular chocolate chips for dark chocolate chunks. The rich, bittersweet notes will give your dip a gourmet feel.
  • Tropical Coconut S’mores Dip: Sprinkle some shredded coconut and a few pineapple chunks on top of the chocolate layer before adding marshmallows.
  • Peppermint Patty S’mores Dip: Add a layer of crushed peppermint candies or a few drops of mint extract to the chocolate for a refreshing twist.
  • Hazelnut Nutella S’mores Dip: Swap the chocolate chips with a layer of Nutella for an irresistibly nutty and chocolatey dip.

Expert Tips

  • Use the Right Dish: A 10-ounce ramekin is perfect for this single serving dip.
  • Preheat Your Oven: This ensures the chocolate melts evenly and the marshmallows toast beautifully.
  • Watch It Closely: Marshmallows can go from toasted to burnt quickly, so keep an eye on your dip while it’s baking.
  • Enjoy it Hot! Your individual s’mores dip is best when it’s fresh from the oven, with gooey chocolate and perfectly melted marshmallows.
  • Reheating Leftovers: Want to revive the dip later? Briefly warm it in the oven for that ‘just baked’ taste. Avoid the microwave to keep the chocolate smooth.
  • Peanut Butter Lovers, Rejoice! For a fun twist, swap the chocolate chips with peanut butter chips. Or, spread a layer of peanut butter over the chocolate before adding marshmallows. It’s a delicious combo!

Serving Suggestions

  • Sweet & Creamy: Why not add a dollop of whipped cream on top right as it comes out of the oven? The cream will melt into the warm dip, creating a third layer of heaven.
  • Nutty Addition: Love a good crunch? Sprinkle some crushed walnuts or hazelnuts under the marshmallow layer before baking. The roasted nuts will add a delightful crunch that pairs well with the gooey marshmallows.
  • Fresh Berry Toppings: Imagine a burst of fruity tanginess with each bite. Scatter a handful of fresh blueberries or thinly sliced strawberries on top of the marshmallows before serving.
  • Fancy Dippers: Think outside the graham cracker box and dip in pretzel sticks for a salty twist or cinnamon sugar pita chips for a spiced angle.
  • Ice Cream Duo: Serve alongside a scoop of your favorite ice cream, whether it’s classic vanilla ice cream or a more adventurous flavor like butter pecan ice cream. The cold ice cream will provide a tantalizing contrast to the warm, gooey dip.

Could this be made in a mini cast-iron skillet? I have one that is 4โ€ in diameter

It should work but I haven’t tested it in a 4 inch diameter cast iron skillet.

  5. Autism Mom says:

Chocolate chips were not melted but marshmallows were really toasted. I had even used mini chocolate chips that usually melt faster.

    1. Joanie Zisk says:

It’s disappointing to know the chocolate did not melt for you. As you can see from the photos and the video, the chocolate should melt. It is worth noting that some of the chocolate chips may retain their shape when heated, but once you dip a graham cracker into them, they should be fully melted. Also, if the ramekin you used was smaller than the recommended 10-ounce ramekin, the layer of chocolate chips would be too thick, making them not all melt.
One final possibility could be the type of chocolate chips used. Not all chocolate chips melt well because they are filled with stabilizers that help them keep their shape. This is why I recommend in the Ingredient Notes section that I use Ghirardelli, Guittard, or Hershey’s brands of chocolate for best results.
