What Are Apple Fritters?
Apple Fritters are a type of fried doughnut filled with chopped apples, pecans, and a mix of cinnamon and nutmeg. They’re usually dusted with powdered sugar and and have their roots in American cuisine, making them a well-loved classic across the United States.
Ingredients
This section provides a quick rundown of the ingredients used in this small batch apple fritters recipe. For complete measurements and step-by-step instructions, please scroll to the recipe card located at the bottom of this post.
- Flour: All-purpose flour is the go-to choice for the fritter batter, providing structure.
- Baking Powder: Essential for helping the apple fritters puff up and become airy.
- Spices: Cinnamon and nutmeg add a warm and inviting aroma that pairs beautifully with apples.
- Brown Sugar: Light or dark both work here, giving the fritters a caramelized sweetness with a hint of molasses. If you don’t have any, consider making a small batch of brown sugar at home.
- Water: Added to achieve the right batter consistency, ensuring it’s not too thick or thin.
- Apple: About 1/3 cup of chopped apple is ideal, equating to one small apple or half a large one. Gala, Honey Crisp, and Granny Smith varieties offer great flavor and texture. If you’ve got a few extra apples, consider using them to make a single serve Apple Cobbler or a small batch of Morning Glory Muffins.
- Pecans: These are optional but highly recommended for added crunch. Walnuts make for a good substitute if pecans aren’t available to you. Use any extra pecans in a Mini Italian Cream Cake, a small batch of Brownies, or creamy Ambrosia.
- Oil: Canola, vegetable, or avocado oil is best for frying, as they have a high smoke point and neutral flavor.
- Powdered Sugar: A light dusting finishes off the fritters nicely. Alternatively, create a simple glaze with powdered sugar and water to drizzle over the cooled treats.

Recipe Variations
Craving a twist on the traditional Apple Fritter? Customization is key, and there are several ways to make these fritters your own:
- Add Spices: Incorporate some cardamom or allspice for different flavor profiles.
- Nut-Free: Omit the pecans and add extra apple chunks.
- Gluten-Free Apple Fritters: If you’re avoiding gluten, you can substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend. Make sure it’s a 1-to-1 substitute to keep the texture and consistency on point.
- Apple Cider Fritters: To infuse your fritters with even more apple flavor, you can replace the water in the batter with apple cider. This will give your fritters a deliciously deep apple flavor that complements the chopped apples and spices.

Hi!
I was wondering if it possible to make these in an air fryer?!
I haven’t tested this recipe in an air fryer. If you try it, please let me know how it turns out for you.
How much oil to use
Add enough oil to come halfway up the sides of the pot you use.
Joanie Iโd like to try this recipe but I donโt know what to do with the used oil. Iโve never deep fried anything. Help please. Lol
Hi Nickie, Allow the oil to cool and then transfer the cooled oil into a disposable container and seal it shut. You can simply throw the container away. If you would like to reuse the oil, strain the oil with some cheesecloth and store it until you are ready to use it again. I find that I can only reuse oil once or twice after the first time.
Will try these today, but was wondering no oil in the batter? Low fat recipe.
Oil is not necessary in the batter.
I made these. Delicious! I used walnuts because thatโs what I had. I mixed a tiny bit of water to powdered sugar and drizzled over. Wonderful. Thank you!
