Ingredients
If you have any ingredients leftover from this recipe, check out our Leftover Ingredients Recipe Finder.
- Olive oil: Choose extra virgin olive oil for the richest flavor and a ton of health benefits, including vitamins and minerals. It’s the least processed variety, offering a robust olive taste that elevates the sauce. If you prefer a milder flavor, you can go with a lighter olive oil instead.
- Garlic: A single clove of fresh garlic adds those delightful, aromatic bits to your sauce. If you’re short on time, swap out the fresh garlic for 1/8 teaspoon of garlic powder. With the powder, there’s no need to simmer; just mix and you’re ready to go.
- Canned tomatoes: The go-to here is canned crushed tomatoes for a smooth and flavorful base. If you have whole, peeled canned tomatoes, a quick whirl in a blender or food processor will get you the consistency you need. If you have leftover canned tomatoes, consider using them in Caponata, Spaghetti Sauce, Tomato Soup, or Slow Cooker Ropa Vieja.
- Tomato paste: This is concentrated tomato goodness in a tiny package. It adds a rich depth to your sauce. I recommend using tomato paste in a tube for extended fridge life. If you only find it in cans, freeze the excess in ice cube trays and store in a freezer-safe bag for future use. Leftover tomato paste can be used in Lasagna Soup or Chili Mac.
- Sugar: A pinch of sugar balances out the tomato’s natural acidity, making for a well-rounded flavor.
- Seasonings: Round it off with dried basil and salt. These pantry staples bring out the Italian essence and offer the finishing touch your pizza sauce craves.

Recipe Variations
Love our basic small batch pizza sauce? Here are some other variations to try.
- Herb-Infused Sauce: If you’re an herb enthusiast, consider adding some freshly chopped oregano or rosemary to the mix. Just sprinkle it in while the sauce is simmering to elevate the flavor profile.
- Spicy Pizza Sauce: For those who like a bit of heat, add a few dashes of red pepper flakes or a small spoonful of sriracha into the sauce. It’ll add a spicy kick that complements the tomato base wonderfully.
- Creamy Pizza Sauce: Mix in a couple of tablespoons of heavy cream for a rosé-like sauce that adds a silky, luxurious texture. Great if you’re going for something a bit indulgent.
- Pizza Sauce With Mushrooms: Finely chop some baby bella or cremini mushrooms and sauté them before adding to the sauce. It’ll add an earthy note that mushroom lovers won’t be able to resist.

Frequently Asked Questions
While they may seem similar, pizza sauce and pasta sauce are not interchangeable. Pizza sauce is usually made with a minimal list of ingredients and is thicker in consistency. Pasta sauce, on the other hand, often includes additional vegetables like onions and carrots, and sometimes even cheese. Plus, pasta sauce generally requires a longer cooking time.
Pizza sauce has a thicker consistency, making it a better choice for a pizza topping. While tomato sauce can be used in a pinch, it won’t offer the same texture or richness.
If your sauce seems too watery, you have a couple of options. Add a bit more tomato paste to increase the thickness or extend the simmering time for another 5 to 10 minutes until the sauce has reduced to your liking.

Nice and easy for quick batch cooking. I usually make enough for four pizzas at a time (saves opening the can of tomatoes and storing them) and add some more seasoning (usually parsley, oregano, and thyme) but really nice. Each serving is the perfect size for standard flatbread
This recipe was so yummy. Iโm glad I came across this one
Second time making. Doubled this time. Smells wonderful when cooking and so easy!

The pizza and sauce recipes are exactly what I was looking for!!!!! Can’t wait to try them! Love your website. Keep it up!!!!!
I am already in love with your website and I have only been cruising through the main dishes! I had to move by myself to Phoenix, AZ about 9 months ago. In the good old days I had a family of 5 to cook for so of course the pots were big and I always hoped for leftovers. Unfortunately I lost several members of my family and my kids grew up and now have families of their own. Just before Covid hit I did personal cookbooks for each of my kids their spouses and the grandkids. I collected a ton of recipes but they all usually require a lot of cooking and lots of portions. I can’t wait to try nearly everything I have seen so far here, and will most likely be hiding out here for a long time…Thanks so much, Grandma Linda
Great recipe.
