Ingredients
This section provides a quick rundown of the ingredients used in this small batch guacamole recipe. For complete measurements and step-by-step instructions, please scroll to the recipe card located at the bottom of this post.
- One avocado: The star of the show. Use a ripe avocado; it should feel slightly soft when gently squeezed. Leftover avocados can be enjoyed with Beef Tacos or Chicken Enchiladas.
- Salt: Enhances the flavor of the avocado. Adjust to preference.
- Lime or lemon juice: Adds a tangy kick and prevents the avocado from browning too quickly. Use leftover lime juice to make a fabulous Skinny Margarita!
- Onions: I love using chopped red onions in my guacamole but yellow onions are most often used in traditional guacamole recipes. Onions provide a crunchy texture. Can be substituted with green onions for a milder flavor. Use leftover onions in Chicken Shawarma or in an Italian Chopped Salad.
- Garlic: Using garlic in guacamole is really a matter of personal preference. I happen to love a little garlic in mine, it adds depth to the dip. If fresh isn’t available, 1/8 teaspoon of garlic powder can be used.
- Jalapeños: For a spicy kick. Remove seeds for less heat, or use bell peppers for a milder version. Consider using any leftover jalapeños in a small batch of cheesy Jalapeño Poppers, Mexican Street Corn Salad, and White Chicken Chili.
Recipe Variations
While traditional guacamole is delightful, there’s no harm in trying something new:
- Fruity Version: Add diced mango or pineapple for a sweet twist.
- Chunky Guacamole: Mix in some diced tomatoes for added texture.
- Creamy Guacamole: Blend in a bit of Greek yogurt for a creamier consistency.
- Zesty Version: Incorporate some chopped cilantro and an extra splash of lime juice.
- Cheesy Guacamole: Fold in some feta or cotija cheese for a different flavor profile.
How To Make Guacamole With One Avocado
- Preparing the Avocado: Cut the avocado in half and remove the pit. Then, scoop the flesh into a mixing bowl. Use a fork to mash the avocado to your preferred texture, whether smooth or chunky.
- Combining Ingredients: Add the other ingredients to the mashed avocado and mix them together until well incorporated.

Expert Tips
- Choose Ripe Avocados: The secret to making perfect guacamole is finding ripe avocados. You don’t want to use a soft avocado.
- My tip is to buy hard avocados and let them ripen at home. Left on the counter, avocados will ripen in a few days.
- You will know if an avocado is perfectly ripe when they give slightly when you gently squeeze them. If you squeeze them and there is no give, or slight indentation, the avocado is not ripe enough. If there is a lot of give and the avocado is soft, then the avocado is likely too ripe.
- Feel Free To Add More Or Less Of Any Ingredient: That’s right, this easy guacamole recipe is absolutely customizable.
- Even though this recipe calls for using red onions, if white onions are what you have on hand, use them.
- If you like your guacamole to be a little more spicy, add in a little more of the chopped pepper.
- Are you a fan of tomatoes in your guac? No problem, chop up a small tomato and add it to yours.
- Finally, many people love cilantro in their guacamole. If you’re one of those people, chop a small amount of cilantro and add it to the dip.
- Cover The Guacamole Completely If Not Eating Right Away: Since guacamole is so easy to make, I like to make it when I’m ready to eat it.
- If you want to make your guacamole ahead of time, make sure you store it properly so that it won’t brown.
- Air exposure turns the guacamole brown, so make sure you transfer it to an airtight container after you make it.
What To Serve With Guacamole
Perfect on its own, this guacamole shines when paired with other dishes. Here are a few ideas:
- Tortilla Chips: The classic partner for guacamole.
- Chicken Tacos: Add a dollop on top for an extra flavor dimension.
- Guacamole Salad: Mix in with your tomatoes, onions, and other vegetables for a creamy dressing alternative.
- Toast: Guacamole on toast with a sprinkle of chili flakes is a great breakfast option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Avocado browns due to exposure to air, a process called oxidation. Lime juice can help reduce this. For longer-lasting freshness, use this technique:
Place your guacamole in a container.
Smooth the surface with a spoon.
Pour a thin layer of water over the guacamole to seal out the air.
Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Using this method, your guacamole can remain fresh for several days.
Absolutely, customize to your preference.

very tasty yummers
Used this recipe to make my first time ever batch of guacamole. It was super easy and delicious. Thank you!
This is everything I was looking for and more! Yummmm ๐๐ฅ๐
When I make guacamole I add cumin and rotel tomatoes, which has green chilies in it already. That way I donโt have to chop onions and tomatoes. I donโt use jalapeรฑos because it makes it too hot. My recipe is almost exact to yours, though.
I sub Tabasco sauce for jalapeรฑos and add some diced fresh tomato or fresh salsa. Guacamole is oh, so good!
I add tomato chunks and cilantro, but thatโs a western influence. I also leave the seed in and smooth plastic wrap onto top to store. I always have a grandchild around to lick the plastic wrap clean before discard!!!
Sounds wonderful, Nikki. Thanks so much for your feedback!
This was delicious and just the right amount!!! This will be my go-to recipe for guac from now on. Thank you!
So easy and flavorful! I just love guacamole!
Thank you so much for sharing! I love some Guacamole!
