How To Wash Berries
It’s best not to wash berries until right before you are ready to use them, or they can get mushy.
- Gently rinse the berries in under cool running water. Be extra careful with delicate blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries.
- Fill a big bowl with about 8 cups of water, add in 4 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, let the berries soak for about 15 minutes, gently rinse and air dry or pat dry with a kitchen towel.
How To Freeze Berries
If you’ve got plenty of fresh berries and would like to extend their shelf life, consider freezing them. When frozen properly, berries will retain their delicious juicy flavor for months.
You will need:
- a rimmed baking sheet
- freezer bags
- a freezer
Steps
- Pick through the berries and make sure there are no stems, unripe or damaged berries in the mix.
- Rinse the berries in cool water and dry thoroughly. You can either pat them dry with a dry kitchen towel or with paper towels.
- Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and place the berries on the sheet in a single layer.
- Place them in the freezer until they are completely frozen, usually a few hours or overnight.
- Transfer the berries to a resealable plastic storage bag, forcing as much air out of the bag as possible before sealing it.
- Store the frozen berries in the freezer until you are ready to use them. Frozen berries will keep for up to 6 months.
Tips For Freezing Berries
- If you’re freezing strawberries, hull the berries (remove the green caps) before freezing.
- Measure the berries with a measuring cup as you put them in the freezer bags and write the amount in cups on each bag. This way, when you need berries for a recipe, you will know how many you have available to use.
