Ingredients
If you have any ingredients leftover from this single serve ham steak recipe, check out our Leftover Ingredients Recipe Finder.
- Ham steak: Choose a fully cooked, 8-ounce ham steak, usually found in the meat section near items like bacon. Look for labels that say “fully cooked,” “cured,” or “hickory smoked.” Uncooked ham steaks aren’t recommended for this recipe. My go-to brand is Smithfield Ham for its reliable flavor and quality.
- Butter: Use 1 tablespoon of salted butter to sear the ham steak and enhance its flavor. Unsalted butter is also fine; just add a pinch of salt for balance.
- Cinnamon and brown sugar: These two ingredients turn the melted butter into a rich, sweet glaze. The brown sugar adds a gentle sweetness, while the cinnamon brings a warm, comforting spice—perfect for making the ham steak even more delicious.
Recipe Variations
This ham steak is wonderfully versatile, so feel free to adjust the flavors to suit your tastes. Here are a few ideas:
- Spicy Glaze: For a kick, replace the brown sugar and cinnamon glaze with a blend of hot sauce and maple syrup.
- Mustard Glazed Ham Steak: Add a spoonful of Dijon mustard to the brown sugar and cinnamon glaze for a hint of tangy flavor.
- Pineapple-Topped: Give your ham steak a tropical twist by cooking it with pineapple slices or rings. The sweet and tangy flavors work incredibly well with ham.

- Classic Mashed Potatoes: Creamy and comforting, mashed potatoes are a perfect match for ham. Top with a pat of butter and a sprinkle of chives for extra flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Look for a fully cooked ham steak, typically labeled “fully cooked,” “cured,” or “hickory smoked.” This saves you time and ensures it’s ready to eat once heated.
The glaze is optional. It adds a sweet, savory flavor, but you can enjoy the ham steak on its own or with a sprinkle of your favorite spices.
Absolutely! Simply double or triple the ingredients based on the number of servings you need.
If your brown sugar glaze hardened, it’s likely due to too high of a heat or cooking the glaze for too long. As shown in our photos and video, the butter should melt and the brown sugar should dissolve into a smooth glaze. This process usually takes between 30 seconds to 2 minutes, depending on the heat level. Keep the heat at medium and watch closely to avoid overcooking.
Store leftover ham steak in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Very tasty! My brother and I enjoyed the ham very much. Thank you for sharing.
love your recipes. I always double the recipe for another meal. Too much trouble for just one serving. Thanks for all you do!
That was a perfect addition for dinner. I used the double and split the ham steak in 8 ounces. We had eggs and potatoes. Iโm going to make that again. Thank you!
Happy New Year!
I thinly slice my ham steak, sprinkle it with seasonings, and fry it in melted butter, along with thinly sliced onions and bell pepper for about 3-4 minutes. I stack ham, onions, and peppers in the center of the fry pan, and top th stack with 2 slices of Provolone cheese, and cook for another minute, until cheese starts to melt. Then, with an appropriate spatula, I carefully lift the pile of ham, onions, peppers, and cheese, and lay it on the bottom half of a warmed hoagie bun cut in half. Top with the top half of the bun, and Voila! You have a Philly Ham Steak Sandwich! Delicious!
Just made this for my Mom and myself for lunch. It was a big hit served with scalloped potatoes and cream corn. Small amounts of leftovers. Just enough for a small snack this afternoon. Thank you for easy recipes that are delicious and small amounts that don’t overwhelm.
Thank you Joanie – always looking for a single serving – going to make this tonight with some Scalloped Potatoes – thank you – Happy Canada Day and Happy 1st of July (US)
