In a 10-inch skillet over medium heat, heat oil 30 seconds. Add onions and cook, stirring occasionally, 2 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook an additional minute.
Add ground beef to skillet and break up with a spatula. Add salt, chili powder, and cumin and cook until meat is no longer pink, about 8 minutes. Transfer the ground beef to a paper towel lined plate to drain. Cover and set aside.
Heat oven to 350°F (177°C). Place taco shells on a baking sheet and bake 5 minutes or until heated.
Fill taco shells with meat and desired toppings.
