What Is Blue Cheese Dressing?

Blue cheese dressing is a highly favored condiment often used as a salad dressing or dip. It’s characterized by its rich, creamy texture and the robust, slightly tangy flavor of blue cheese. Known for its blue veins and bold taste, blue cheese elevates the dressing, making it a go-to option for those who love bold flavors.

Ingredients And Substitutions

  • Blue Cheese: The star of this dressing, blue cheese brings the robust flavor. You can also opt for French Roquefort or Gorgonzola. Adjust the crumble size to control the texture of your dressing. If you’ve blue cheese leftover from this dressing recipe, consider using it in single serving Buffalo Cauliflower Tacos and Baked Buffalo Chicken.
  • Sour cream: Whether full-fat or low-fat, sour cream adds a layer of tartness that balances the richness of the blue cheese. Leftover sour cream can be used in a Mexican Street Corn Salad, Hashbrown Casserole, and a small batch of Corn Muffins.
  • Heavy cream: Also known as double cream, heavy whipping cream can be used as well. If unavailable, full-fat milk or half-and-half are suitable substitutes. Any leftover heavy cream can be used in Chicken Tikka Masala, Lasagna Soup, and a small White Cake.
  • Olive oil: Extra virgin olive oil is my go-to due to its minimal processing and high-quality taste profile. However, if you prefer a milder flavor, a lighter olive oil will work.
  • Lemon juice: Fresh or bottled, lemon juice contributes zesty notes. For an alternative tang, try lime juice.
  • Salt and black pepper: These seasonings are adjustable to taste. Don’t hesitate to use more or less depending on your flavor preferences.

Recipe Variations

The best thing about this blue cheese dressing is its versatility. Want to switch things up? Here are some mouthwatering variations you can try:

  • Buttermilk Blue Cheese Dressing: Replace the heavy cream with buttermilk. This will give your dressing a tangier kick and a slightly thinner consistency, ideal for drizzling over salads.
  • Greek Yogurt Blue Cheese Dressing: Substitute the sour cream for Greek yogurt. You’ll end up with a protein-rich dressing that maintains the creamy texture we all love in a good blue cheese dressing.
  • Blue Cheese Vinaigrette: Swap out the creamy base for a mix of olive oil, vinegar, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. This creates a lighter dressing that pairs superbly with hearty greens.
  • Spicy Blue Cheese Dressing: Craving some heat? Add a dash of hot sauce or some diced jalapeños to the mix. This spiced-up version is especially good for dipping wings.
  • Herbed Blue Cheese Dressing: Stir in fresh herbs like dill, chives, or parsley for a flavor-packed, herbaceous twist. It’s an excellent choice for both dipping and drizzling.

Expert Tips

  • Double Up: This blue cheese dressing recipe is easily scalable. Feel free to double the quantities if you’re in need of extra dressing.
  • Quality Matters: Opt for a high-quality block of blue cheese over pre-packaged crumbles. Blocks usually offer better moisture, leading to a creamier end result in your dressing.
  • Season to Taste: Don’t hesitate to tweak the salt and pepper levels after mixing. Customizing the seasoning will ensure the dressing perfectly suits your palate.
